Day 15: Prayer Matters
James 5:16b-18
“...The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working. Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed fervently that it might not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain on the earth. Then he prayed again, and heaven gave rain, and the earth bore its fruit.”
Elijah prayed that it would not rain. And it did not rain on the earth for 3 and ½ years. No doubt the point of this scripture is for us to connect the dots and see the power of prayer. And just in case you’re thinking “well, Elijah was a special Prophet, of course his prayers can stop the rain”, James makes sure to tell us that Elijah was just a man like us. He was an ordinary man who believed in the extraordinary power of God, and knew that prayer was how He had access to that power.
Prayer is not just what you should do before some important work. Prayer is the important work. Take the time today, and boldly ask God to do things you cannot accomplish in your own power, remember you have just as much access as Elijah so pray, believing that He will work in power according to His will.
PRAYER: Father, I want to learn to pray like Elijah. I want to ask you for BIG things that only you can do. Give me the faith to believe and the courage to pray like this. For your glory alone! AMEN.
