Day 8: “Our Father”
Mattew 6:9 Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven,
Luke 11:1 Now Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.” 2 And he said to them, “When you pray, say: “Father…
If you could be taught one thing from Jesus today what would it be? How to get the most out of your life? How to be a better parent? Maybe even how to share your faith more? Well the disciples asked Jesus to teach them one thing: how to pray. So Jesus responds by teaching a pattern of prayer which begins: “Our Father”
“Our Father”. Jesus just made the astounding statement that the same Father that listened to and worked for Jesus has become our own Father! Jesus is teaching we have the same access and privilege to know God as Father as He did! If Jesus’s Father has become our father then we can pray knowing we are beloved children of God. Jesus starts with these words because all prayer begins in this relationship of a God who sent His Son Jesus, so we would become His sons and daughters. This means we pray knowing we are both fully cared for and fully loved by the God who has become our Father.
This word Father uses the ideas of power and love for His child. Authority and intimacy. Our Father loves us and is intimately involved with our lives. So when we pray we are praying to our Father who has the power to help and a heart filled with love for us that desires to help. So trust our father is more ready to hear from us than we are to pray so begin to enjoy the gift of what Jesus has brought us by praying to and knowing God more and more, which after all is eternal life. (John 17:3) Today pray knowing the most powerful being in the universe is your father and can’t wait to hear from you, His child!
PRAYER: Our Father thank you that I am welcomed and loved to come to you as Jesus is. Thank you for seeing me lost and helpless and sending Jesus in your great love to rescue me and make me your own. I thank you for your love and the way you continue to watch over and care for me daily like a good good father.
