5. Darkness

Psalm 88 is the darkest of the Psalms of lamentation. It begins and ends with sadness, and deep darkness. We are comforted that this Psalm reaches into the worst places of our lives, and we know that even there, God is with us. Jesus knows this kind of darkness even more fully than we do on our worst days. He endured full abandonment of God, so that we could enjoy the fullness of adoption by God.
